Pune rural students gain global science exposure

Pune is widening the route from rural classrooms to advanced science, with 100 students from the district selected for educational exposure visits to major space research institutions in India and abroad. The programme, being implemented by the Pune Zilla Parishad with scientific support from IUCAA, will send students to NASA, the European Space Agency and ISRO in September, extending an initiative that began last year.

The selection includes 25 students for NASA, 25 for the European Space Agency and 50 for ISRO. Students from all 13 blocks of Pune district have made the final list, with Shirur contributing the largest group at 16, followed by Khed with 13 and Haveli with 10. The expansion is significant because access to high-level science networks remains uneven across India. Students in rural government schools can face fewer opportunities to interact with researchers, laboratories and advanced learning environments than their counterparts in major cities. Exposure programmes can help narrow that gap, particularly when they are linked to sustained classroom learning rather than treated as one-off excursions. The initiative also has a wider economic dimension. India’s space and technology sectors increasingly require skilled workers across engineering, data science, electronics, materials, earth observation and related disciplines. Giving students early contact with these fields can influence subject choices and career aspirations long before they enter higher education.

IUCAA has already documented its role in science outreach and public engagement, including programmes connected with the Pune Zilla Parishad’s NASA-ISRO initiative. Its 2026 National Science Day programme included a session in which participating students were expected to discuss what they learnt through the educational visits. The programme is also becoming more competitive. More than 23,600 students registered for this year’s selection process, while over 19,000 appeared for the first written examination, according to reports published in June. That level of participation suggests that demand for exposure to science and technology is substantially larger than the number of available places. For students who reached the final stages but were not selected, the district administration plans alternative educational exposure, including visits to Delhi and a student exchange programme involving border states. Such alternatives matter because a broad talent pipeline cannot depend only on a small number of overseas placements.

The challenge now is continuity. Pune rural students need access not only to prestigious institutions but also to laboratories, mentors, digital learning and quality science teaching after they return home. Pune rural students can become part of a stronger local innovation ecosystem if exposure is followed by practical opportunities. The long-term measure of the programme will therefore be what happens after the journeys end: whether curiosity becomes sustained learning, and whether rural talent receives the infrastructure and support needed to participate in India’s expanding knowledge economy.
