Pune is facing renewed concerns over its drinking water security as reservoir levels supplying the city remain critically low despite the arrival of the southwest monsoon. While intermittent rainfall has been recorded across the city over recent days, inflows into the four key reservoirs have remained limited, highlighting the uneven distribution of seasonal rainfall and raising questions about water resilience during the months ahead.
According to the latest water storage data, the combined live storage in the four reservoirs that supply Pune has dropped to around 13 per cent of total capacity. The figure marks a sharp decline compared with the same period last year, when reservoir levels were above half of their usable capacity. The gap reflects both delayed catchment rainfall and the growing vulnerability of urban water systems to changing monsoon patterns. The city’s water supply depends on the Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar reservoirs, which rely heavily on sustained rainfall across the Western Ghats catchment rather than rainfall within the city itself. Although Pune has experienced light showers over the past two days, hydrology experts note that local rainfall contributes little to reservoir replenishment unless accompanied by widespread precipitation in upstream catchment areas. Urban planners say the situation reinforces the need for climate-resilient water management as cities become increasingly exposed to erratic weather patterns. Short periods of rainfall within urban limits may reduce temperatures and improve local conditions but are insufficient to secure long-term drinking water supplies if reservoir catchments remain dry.
Officials continue to monitor inflows closely as weather forecasts indicate the possibility of stronger rainfall activity over western Maharashtra in the coming days. If substantial precipitation reaches the dam catchments during July, storage levels could improve significantly. However, prolonged rainfall deficits may require continued demand management measures, including regulated water distribution and conservation initiatives. Experts also stress that cities must reduce dependence on seasonal rainfall by expanding water recycling, improving leakage control, protecting watershed ecosystems and promoting efficient consumption across residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Such measures can strengthen urban resilience against increasingly unpredictable monsoon cycles influenced by climate variability. The contrast between current storage levels and last year’s reserves has intensified public concern, particularly as Pune’s population and water demand continue to grow. Infrastructure specialists argue that future planning should integrate reservoir management with groundwater recharge, rainwater harvesting and sustainable urban development to improve long-term water security.
For now, Pune’s water outlook remains closely tied to rainfall over the Western Ghats during the remainder of the monsoon season. Civic authorities are expected to continue monitoring storage levels while encouraging responsible water use until reservoir inflows recover to more comfortable levels, ensuring that the city’s essential water needs can be met through the year.
