Pune Rainfall Triggers Severe Waterlogging as Indapur Gets 131mm

Pune rainfall caused severe waterlogging across parts of the district after intense overnight showers, with Indapur recording 131mm in the 24 hours ending 8.30am on Monday. Baramati received 77.2mm, while Pune city recorded 41.1mm at Shivajinagar during the same period, disrupting traffic and affecting roadside businesses.

The heaviest impact was reported in rural areas, particularly around Baramati and Indapur. Chakan also experienced severe waterlogging, slowing movement on roads and affecting commuters during the Monday morning rush. Several major roads and internal lanes in Pune remained inundated as rain intensified after midnight on Sunday and continued into Monday morning.

Within Pune city, Hadapsar recorded 35.5mm, Haveli 35mm and Magarpatta 30.5mm. Ambegaon received 49.5mm, while Shirur and Dhamdhere recorded 39mm and 39.5mm, respectively. The rainfall was accompanied by failures of several traffic signals, adding to congestion as vehicles moved slowly through waterlogged stretches.

Traffic police said the pace of traffic had slowed because of water accumulation and continuing rainfall. The disruption came during the morning peak period, when roads were carrying office commuters, commercial vehicles and local traffic. The report did not specify the number of roads affected or the duration of signal outages.

The rain also brought down tree branches at several locations. A large tree collapsed in the Khadki Bazaar area around midnight, although no injuries were reported. Fire brigade personnel cleared fallen branches and trees to restore movement, according to the report.

Temporary Diwali stalls near Mahatma Phule Mandai and Shaniwar Peth were also affected. Rainwater entered shops and damaged merchandise, leaving traders and vendors trying to protect their goods during the festive shopping period. The impact on the stalls highlighted the exposure of temporary commercial activity in crowded market areas to sudden rainfall and inadequate drainage.

Pune had received showers at around 8.30pm on Sunday, followed by another spell around midnight. Rain persisted after 9am on Monday, extending the disruption beyond the morning commute. The India Meteorological Department has forecast mainly clear skies that would turn partly cloudy by the afternoon or evening, with very light to light rain likely.

The weather department has issued a rain alert for Pune and surrounding areas for two days. Authorities are continuing to manage fallen trees, waterlogged roads and traffic movement as the district remains under the alert.
