Pune rain brought relief from several days of intense October heat on Monday, while heavy showers affected the city, suburbs and parts of Pune district and the India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Maharashtra. The alert covers parts of Konkan and central Maharashtra, where thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Rain began late on Sunday night and continued into Monday morning, with intermittent showers reported across Pune. The downpour affected central peth areas as well as Shivajinagar, Hadapsar, Kothrud, Aundh, Baner, Balewadi, Warje, Sinhagad Road, Katraj and Kondhwa.
Water accumulated at several locations after the sudden spell of heavy rain, according to the report. The showers also brought cooler conditions after days of oppressive heat, providing relief to residents across the city and its surrounding areas.
The weather system was not limited to Pune city. Heavy rain was also reported in parts of the district, including Baramati, Indapur, Ambegaon, Junnar and Jejuri, along with other talukas. The rain comes as parts of the state face concerns over dry conditions and water availability.
The showers may support rabi sowing and standing crops in affected rural areas, according to the report. However, the available information does not provide crop-wise damage assessments, rainfall totals or details of agricultural advisories issued for farmers.
Rain was also reported in the catchment areas of the reservoirs that supply water to Pune. The report said reservoir storage recorded a modest increase, offering some relief amid concerns about possible water shortages during the summer. It did not specify the individual reservoirs, the volume of additional storage or the current live storage position.
For residents, the immediate impact is likely to be on road conditions, local travel and visibility during intense spells. Water accumulation was reported at several points, but the report did not mention major traffic disruptions, injuries, structural damage or official emergency measures by civic authorities.
The Meteorological Department has warned of thunderstorms and heavy rain in parts of Konkan and central Maharashtra during the next 24 to 48 hours. Pune is expected to remain cloudy, with light to moderate showers possible over the following hours. Residents have been advised to remain alert as the yellow alert remains in effect.
