Pune Rain Brings 41.1 mm Downpour, Disrupts Diwali Rush

Pune rain brought relief from the October heat but disrupted morning travel and Diwali preparations after Shivajinagar recorded 41.1 mm in the 24 hours up to 8.30 am on Monday, according to India Meteorological Department data. The rainfall was the highest 24-hour November total recorded in the city since 2019.

Rain began in parts of Pune at around 8.30 pm on Sunday before intensifying around midnight and continuing into the early hours of Monday. Another spell of heavy rain was reported at about 6.30 am, coinciding with the period when office-goers were preparing to leave home.

Commuters used umbrellas and raincoats, while two-wheeler riders struggled with wet roads and waterlogged patches. Traffic slowed in places as motorists navigated puddles, and signal systems reportedly stopped functioning in some areas. Crowding was also reported at bus stops as passengers waited through the morning showers.

The rainfall affected several of the city’s major shopping areas ahead of Diwali. Citizens visiting Mandai, Laxmi Road, Tulshibaug, Raviwar Peth and Bohri Aali continued shopping with umbrellas and raincoats. Vendors used tarpaulins to protect goods and temporary displays from the rain.

The IMD recorded 36.2 mm at Lohegaon, 35.5 mm at Hadapsar, 30.5 mm at Magarpatta, 25.6 mm at Warje, 19.5 mm at Chinchwad, 14.6 mm at Pashan and 7 mm at Khadakwasla by 8.30 am. A reading of 10.9 mm was recorded in the city by 5.30 pm.

The rain also caused a tree to fall in the Khadki Bazaar area around midnight. Fire brigade personnel removed the branches and cleared the road. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The rainfall followed an unusually dry October in Pune. The Shivajinagar observatory recorded only 1.7 mm of rain during October 2026 before the 41.1 mm event at the beginning of November. The latest total was the highest 24-hour rainfall recorded in November since 2019, when the city received 52.3 mm in a single 24-hour period.

Rain around the Diwali period has occurred several times in recent years. On October 14, 2017, Pune recorded 101.3 mm in 24 hours, described in the report as the city’s historic October rainfall figure. On November 10, 2023, Hadapsar received 70.5 mm between 5 pm and 9 pm, while the city recorded an average of 27 mm. Shivajinagar recorded 20 mm in 15 minutes on October 19, 2024, and Lohegaon recorded 40.4 mm on October 23, 2025.

The IMD forecast light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning for November 2 and 3, followed by a possibility of light rain on November 4. Mainly clear weather was forecast from November 5 to 8.
