Pune Railway Station Gets New Crowd Management Hub

Pune Railway Station is getting a permanent passenger holding facility as railway authorities seek to manage heavy crowds before they reach platforms and concourses. The planned 5,800-square-metre facility is designed to organise passenger movement during peak periods, addressing a capacity challenge that has become increasingly important as Pune’s rail traffic grows.

The facility is being developed on land behind the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus stand. It will divide passenger movement into three stages: pre-ticketing, ticketing and post-ticketing. The arrangement is intended to prevent large groups from entering the station simultaneously and create a more controlled route towards platforms. According to the proposed layout, the pre-ticketing section will occupy about 1,571 square metres, while the ticketing and post-ticketing zones will cover roughly 2,384 and 1,852 square metres respectively. A separate 580-square-metre area is planned for drop-offs, pick-ups and pedestrian movement. The design effectively turns the station approach into a passenger-processing system rather than leaving crowd management to the concourse and platforms. Ticket counters and automatic ticket vending machines will be distributed across the facility, while seating will give passengers a designated place to wait before moving towards their trains.

The need for such infrastructure has become more visible during festival and holiday periods. Pune station has previously introduced temporary holding arrangements during major travel surges, including the summer and Holi periods, to prevent overcrowding and improve passenger safety. The permanent facility is also arriving alongside wider changes at the station. Work has begun on additional platforms as part of the railway yard remodelling programme, with six new platforms planned in phases. Railway authorities have previously said the wider station development is intended to address capacity constraints created by rising passenger numbers and train movements. However, a larger holding space will only solve part of Pune station’s congestion problem. Passenger movement is closely connected to road access, buses, Metro services, pedestrian crossings and foot-over bridges. Pune Metro’s station adjacent to the railway station is already designed for interchange, including a direct foot-over-bridge connection, making integration between modes important to the overall passenger experience.

The project should therefore be assessed not simply by how many passengers can wait inside the facility, but by whether people can move through the entire interchange safely and efficiently. Clear signage, accessible routes, adequate seating, toilets, drinking water and facilities for older passengers, children and people with disabilities will be central to its usefulness. For a city increasingly dependent on public transport, crowd management is a basic element of urban resilience. Pune’s next challenge is ensuring that station expansion, passenger facilities and connections to other modes grow together rather than treating congestion as a problem confined to the railway platform.
