Mumbai–Pune’s most recognised rail connection has been temporarily suspended after intense monsoon-triggered landslides damaged railway infrastructure in the Western Ghats, disrupting passenger movement and exposing the growing vulnerability of transport networks to extreme weather. The interruption affects one of India’s longest-running intercity services and highlights the need for stronger climate-resilient rail infrastructure across critical corridors.

Rail operations between Mumbai and Pune were curtailed after landslides and debris damaged tracks at multiple locations in the Karjat–Lonavala ghat section, forcing railway authorities to suspend several train services, including the historic Deccan Queen. Engineering teams have been deployed to restore the route, while safety inspections continue before normal operations resume. The disruption extends beyond a temporary travel inconvenience. The Mumbai–Pune railway corridor is among western India’s busiest passenger and business routes, carrying daily office commuters, students, tourists and commercial travellers. Service interruptions can affect regional productivity, increase pressure on highways and delay the movement of people across Maharashtra’s two major economic centres.

Introduced in 1930, the Deccan Queen has long been recognised as a landmark in India’s railway history, connecting Mumbai and Pune through one of the country’s most challenging mountain stretches. Over decades, the service has built a reputation for reliability despite facing occasional disruptions caused by natural disasters, infrastructure failures and operational emergencies. Railway officials indicated that persistent rainfall has saturated slopes along the ghat section, increasing the likelihood of rockfalls and landslides. Urban mobility experts note that changing rainfall patterns associated with climate variability are placing ageing transport infrastructure under greater stress, particularly in mountainous regions where drainage systems, retaining structures and slope stabilisation require continuous monitoring. Transport planners believe the latest disruption reinforces the importance of investing in predictive monitoring technologies, real-time geological assessments and resilient engineering solutions rather than relying solely on emergency restoration after extreme weather events. Modern sensor-based surveillance, improved drainage management and proactive maintenance could reduce service interruptions during future monsoon seasons. The Deccan Queen also represents an important sustainable transport option by shifting thousands of daily journeys from private vehicles to rail. Extended suspensions may encourage greater road usage along the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, potentially increasing congestion, emissions and travel uncertainty during periods of heavy rainfall.

Industry observers suggest that India’s expanding investment in railway modernisation should increasingly prioritise climate adaptation alongside capacity enhancement. Strengthening vulnerable mountain corridors, integrating weather forecasting into operational planning and improving disaster preparedness will be essential to maintaining reliable public transport as extreme weather events become more frequent. Restoration work is expected to continue until railway authorities certify the affected sections as safe. The incident serves as another reminder that resilient infrastructure is becoming as critical as expanding infrastructure in safeguarding mobility, economic activity and public confidence across rapidly growing urban regions.
