Pune: Indian Railways has begun testing an artificial intelligence-driven linen inspection system at mechanised laundry facilities in the Pune Division as part of a broader initiative to improve hygiene standards and service quality for passengers travelling in air-conditioned coaches. The pilot marks another step towards integrating digital technologies into railway operations, supporting more efficient asset management and enhancing passenger experience across one of the country’s busiest public transport networks.

The AI linen inspection pilot uses automated camera-based imaging to identify stains and quality defects in washed bedrolls before they are packed for distribution. By replacing manual visual checks with machine-assisted inspection, railway authorities aim to improve consistency in quality control while reducing the likelihood of unsuitable linen reaching passengers. The Pune Division of Central Railway has been selected alongside the Jaipur and Jodhpur divisions of North Western Railway for the initial implementation. Officials indicated that insights from the pilot will help assess the technology’s operational performance before any wider deployment across the national railway system.

Every bedroll supplied to passengers travelling in air-conditioned coaches includes two bed sheets, a pillow cover and a hand towel, with one bed sheet intended to act as a protective layer beneath the blanket to improve hygiene. Railway authorities maintain scheduled replacement cycles for these items, ensuring they are withdrawn from service after reaching prescribed usage limits based on operational standards and material durability. Transport experts note that the adoption of AI linen inspection reflects a wider digital transformation underway across India’s railway network. Artificial intelligence is increasingly being explored for predictive maintenance, operational monitoring and service quality improvements, enabling public transport agencies to optimise resources while maintaining higher standards of passenger care. Industry observers believe automated inspection systems can also generate valuable operational data, allowing maintenance teams to identify recurring quality issues, improve laundry processes and reduce wastage. Such measures contribute to more efficient use of public resources while supporting sustainability through better lifecycle management of railway assets.

The hygiene initiative accompanies broader efforts to modernise passenger services, including the introduction of protective blanket covers on selected premium train services. Simultaneously, railway authorities continue expanding digital safety infrastructure, with surveillance systems now installed across thousands of railway stations and passenger coaches to strengthen operational security. Urban mobility specialists emphasise that investments in service quality are becoming increasingly important as rail transport remains central to India’s low-carbon mobility strategy. Cleaner onboard facilities, improved operational efficiency and technology-enabled quality assurance can strengthen public confidence in rail travel while encouraging greater use of mass transit over private vehicles.
