Pune Automated Parking Structure Faces Planned Demolition

Pune: Civic authorities have approved the dismantling of Pune’s first fully automated multi-level parking structure after concluding that the ageing facility is no longer safe, technically viable or financially sustainable. The decision marks the end of an early experiment in automated urban parking and highlights the growing need for infrastructure projects that prioritise lifecycle maintenance, operational resilience and efficient use of public resources.

The mechanised parking tower, located within the Sambhaji Garden precinct along Jangli Maharaj Road, was introduced nearly two decades ago to maximise vehicle parking within a limited urban footprint. Designed to accommodate around 60 cars through an automated lifting system, the facility represented an innovative approach to land optimisation at a time when parking demand in Pune’s commercial core was steadily increasing. However, recurring technical failures led to the facility remaining out of service for several years. Municipal officials have now determined that the specialised steel structure has deteriorated to a point where continued maintenance would involve disproportionate expenditure while offering little public benefit. After reviewing the asset’s condition, the civic administration concluded that demolition was a more practical option than restoration.

According to officials involved in the decision-making process, the local administration was unable to identify an agency with the required expertise to undertake the repair, operation and long-term maintenance of the automated system. The absence of specialised technical support, combined with rising maintenance costs, ultimately weakened the case for reviving the infrastructure. Urban planners say the automated parking facility reflects the challenges many Indian cities face when adopting advanced urban technologies without establishing long-term maintenance frameworks. While automated parking systems can reduce land consumption and improve space efficiency in dense city centres, their success depends on sustained technical oversight, availability of spare components and financially viable operational models. The planned dismantling also raises broader questions about public investment in technology-driven infrastructure. Experts note that lifecycle costing, operational resilience and maintenance capacity should receive equal consideration alongside initial construction costs when evaluating future mobility projects. Such assessments become increasingly important as cities invest in smart mobility, digital infrastructure and automated urban systems.

Authorities have indicated that demolition costs will be determined based on the quantity of steel recovered during dismantling. The timeline for removal is expected to be finalised after administrative procedures are completed, with officials also expected to assess future use of the site once the automated parking facility has been removed. As Pune continues expanding its transport and mobility infrastructure, the experience offers a practical lesson in balancing innovation with long-term asset management. Future parking and mobility projects are likely to place greater emphasis on operational reliability, financial sustainability and adaptability to evolving urban transport needs, ensuring public infrastructure remains functional throughout its intended lifespan.
