Pune Power Cuts Hit Kharadi, Viman Nagar During Diwali

Pune power cuts have affected Kharadi, Wadgaonsheri, Chandan Nagar, Viman Nagar, Lohegaon and Kalyani Nagar for about 15 days, with residents reporting outages lasting three to four hours during the day and two to three hours at night during the Diwali period.

The repeated interruptions have affected households preparing for the festival as well as shops, offices, small industries and other commercial establishments in eastern Pune. Residents said power failures were disrupting cleaning, painting, food preparation and business activity, while some establishments were relying on generators or other backup arrangements.

Complaints have been reported from areas including Shriram Society in Kharadi and Chandan Nagar, Khulewadi, Khandvenagar, Sopan Nagar, Somnath Nagar, Ramwadi, Wadgaonsheri village, the Chandan Nagar vegetable market area, Chaudhary Vasti, Tuljabhavani Nagar, Aaple Ghar and different parts of Lohegaon. The Viman Nagar-Shastrinagar and Wadgaonsheri Mahavitaran divisions cover the affected locations.

Residents have also raised concerns about the possible impact of sudden outages on computers, electronic equipment and other electrical appliances. They questioned why power supply was being interrupted repeatedly even though scheduled maintenance shutdowns were already taking place during the week.

Mahavitaran officials attributed some interruptions to technical faults, maintenance and repair work. Dhanashree Bhujbal, an engineer with the Mahavitaran Viman Nagar division, said outages in the Shri Park and Khandve Nagar areas had been linked to the installation of a new power line. She said the new line and other pending work in those areas had been completed, and steps had been taken to prevent further disruption, particularly during Diwali.

“New power line work was under way in the Shri Park and Khandve Nagar areas, which led to repeated interruptions. However, the new line and all pending work in these areas have been completed,” Bhujbal said, according to the report. She added that care had been taken to ensure that residents would not face similar interruptions during the festival period.

Yogesh Sonawane, an engineer with the Wadgaonsheri-Kalyani Nagar Mahavitaran division, said maintenance and repair shutdowns were being carried out according to a schedule. He said there were no other planned interruptions and that power supply in different parts of Wadgaonsheri was currently operating normally. Sonawane also attributed some outages during the monsoon to rainfall.

Residents, however, said interruptions had continued for several days, with power reportedly failing even after brief rainfall. Kavita Galande, president of the ward committee of the Yerawada-Wadgaonsheri regional office, said residents were facing repeated inconvenience and alleged that Mahavitaran had failed to maintain reliable supply in the area.

The differing accounts highlight the immediate service issue facing a rapidly urbanising part of Pune, where residential societies, commercial areas and small businesses depend on the same distribution network. Mahavitaran officials have said completed line work should reduce interruptions in the affected pockets, while residents continue to seek a permanent solution and more reliable communication about outages.
