Pune Police Suspensions Expose Three Serious Lapses

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has ordered the suspension of three personnel in separate cases involving the alleged mishandling of a ₹30 lakh robbery complaint, investigation failures and alleged misconduct while off duty, according to a report by Pudhari – Pune.

The suspended personnel are Market Yard police station senior inspector Vishwajit Jagtap, Fursungi police station woman police sub-inspector Komal Kachru Jadhav and woman police constable Ashwini Kekan, who is posted at Kalepadal police station. The orders were issued by the police commissioner, Additional Commissioner Rajesh Bansode and Deputy Commissioner Jeevan Beniwal in the respective cases.

Jagtap’s suspension relates to the handling of a robbery complaint involving ₹30 lakh. According to the report, complainant Shravan Devasi and his associate Ganpat Devasi were travelling on a two-wheeler on 7 October when five people allegedly sprayed something on their faces, snatched a bag containing the cash and fled.

After the incident was reported, sub-inspector Akshaykumar Gadgade and other personnel reached the location, took details and returned to the police station. The complainants’ statement was reportedly written on a piece of paper, and they were told that a formal case would be registered after CCTV footage was examined. The report says the complainants made several visits to the police station seeking registration of the complaint, but a robbery case was not filed. Instead, a property-missing complaint was registered.

The matter later came to the attention of Commissioner Kumar. The suspension order reportedly cited indiscipline, negligence and conduct that damaged the image of the police force. The report does not state whether the alleged robbers have been identified or whether the cash has been recovered.

Jadhav, who was posted at Fursungi police station, was suspended over alleged serious shortcomings in the investigation of a criminal case. The report says that after an accused approached the High Court for anticipatory bail, Jadhav submitted what the suspension order described as a brief and vague report in her capacity as investigating officer. She was also expected to remain present in court during the hearing but did not attend, according to the order cited in the report.

The third action concerns Kekan, who was reportedly suspended after a video circulated on social media. The report says she allegedly drove a car in the wrong direction after consuming alcohol, hit a footpath and abused citizens and other motorists. The incident occurred while she was on leave for two days, although she remained posted at Kalepadal police station.

The three cases involve different forms of alleged failure: delayed or inadequate registration of a serious complaint, shortcomings in presenting an investigation before the court, and conduct that allegedly endangered road users. Together, the disciplinary actions show the police administration responding through internal suspension orders when conduct or procedure is found to have fallen short of official expectations.

The report does not provide details of the departmental inquiries, the current status of the robbery investigation or the next procedural steps in the case involving the High Court. Those matters will determine whether the suspensions lead to further disciplinary action or other findings.
