Pune Police Constable Held With 12 Kg Ganja, Suspended

A Pune city police constable was arrested in Telangana after police allegedly found 12 kilograms of ganja in his bag, prompting Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar to suspend him immediately and begin preparations for possible dismissal from service.

The constable, identified as Nitin Gyanu Shinde, was posted with the Vishrambaug traffic division of the Pune city police and had been working there for about one-and-a-half years, according to the report. He was detained in Warangal district while allegedly travelling with the contraband from Odisha to another state.

Police said they received information that a person carrying a large quantity of ganja was waiting at a bus stop in the district. Officers reached the location and searched Shinde’s bag, where they allegedly found the 12-kilogram consignment. During questioning, he reportedly disclosed that he was employed as a constable in the Pune city police force.

The case has been registered at the Nekkonda police station in Warangal district under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The report does not specify the sections invoked, the destination of the alleged consignment or whether any other person was involved.

According to the report, Shinde had taken medical leave while allegedly carrying out the activity. The arrest of a serving police employee in a suspected ganja smuggling case has drawn attention within the police department because the alleged conduct involves an official responsible for enforcing law and order and traffic regulations in Pune.

Commissioner Amitesh Kumar ordered Shinde’s suspension after receiving information about the arrest. The report also states that the department has started preparations to dismiss him from the police service. Any final disciplinary action will depend on the departmental process and the proceedings in the NDPS case.
