Pune: Security measures for the annual Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage have intensified after Pune Police detained 89 individuals during a targeted crime prevention operation aimed at protecting lakhs of pilgrims. The Pune Wari security initiative reflects the growing importance of proactive policing and crowd management in safeguarding large religious gatherings while ensuring uninterrupted movement through the city’s urban transport corridors.

The operation was carried out during the peak days of the pilgrimage procession, when thousands of devotees moved through Pune as part of the traditional palkhi route. Police deployed specialised teams to monitor vulnerable locations, prevent theft, chain-snatching and other opportunistic crimes that typically rise during large public gatherings. According to officials, dedicated anti-chain-snatching units were positioned along key stretches of the procession route, supported by additional investigation teams tasked with verifying the backgrounds of detained suspects and responding quickly to complaints. The exercise resulted in the detention of 89 individuals for questioning as part of preventive policing measures designed to deter criminal activity before offences could occur.
