Pune: A sharp rise in passport applications following revised passport fees and growing international mobility has significantly extended appointment waiting periods at passport service centres across Pune. The surge has pushed routine appointments several weeks ahead, highlighting increasing demand for travel documentation as more residents pursue overseas education, employment and business opportunities.

The Pune passport appointments system has experienced a substantial increase in bookings after the Union government announced revised passport charges while allowing applicants a limited window to secure appointments under the previous fee structure. The temporary booking opportunity triggered a nationwide spike in applications, resulting in longer queues at major passport centres, including those serving Pune and neighbouring districts. However, officials note that a noticeable proportion of applicants fail to attend their allotted appointment slots, requiring rescheduling and reducing overall system efficiency. Improved attendance and timely cancellation of unused appointments could help optimise available capacity and reduce waiting periods for other applicants.

Urban policy experts observe that the expanding demand for passports reflects broader socioeconomic trends rather than administrative challenges alone. Rising international mobility signals stronger participation in global education, employment and trade networks, requiring public service infrastructure to scale accordingly. As cities such as Pune continue attracting globally connected professionals and students, digital governance systems will need to evolve to handle higher citizen demand efficiently.
