Pune: Regional road connectivity between Pune, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai is set for a significant improvement as work progresses on a new twin-arm flyover that will remove a major traffic bottleneck along the Sion-Panvel Highway. The strategic infrastructure project is expected to shorten travel times, ease congestion and strengthen one of Maharashtra’s busiest economic and transport corridors when completed in 2027.
The Pune Mumbai connectivity project centres on constructing two elevated vehicular arms linking the Sion-Panvel Highway with the existing Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR). The design will allow uninterrupted movement for vehicles travelling between Ghatkopar, Navi Mumbai and Pune while bypassing a heavily congested signalised junction that currently experiences prolonged traffic delays throughout the day. For commuters travelling between Pune and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the project is expected to reduce travel uncertainty at one of the eastern corridor’s busiest intersections. The junction handles substantial daily traffic from private vehicles, commercial transport, logistics operators and long-distance travellers, often resulting in queues that extend well beyond the signal during peak periods. Urban mobility experts believe grade-separated infrastructure at high-volume intersections can improve corridor efficiency by separating through traffic from local traffic movements. Instead of vehicles competing for limited road space at a single junction, the elevated flyover will streamline directional traffic, reducing conflict points and improving overall network performance.
The flyover will comprise two elevated carriageways measuring approximately 1.47 kilometres and 1.93 kilometres. One arm will provide direct movement towards the Navi Mumbai and Pune corridor, while the second will integrate with the existing Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road. The engineering design is intended to support smoother traffic flow without requiring extensive widening of surrounding urban roads. Beyond reducing travel times, the Pune Mumbai connectivity initiative is expected to generate wider economic benefits. The corridor serves as a crucial link connecting Pune’s manufacturing, information technology and education sectors with Mumbai’s financial district, Navi Mumbai’s logistics hubs and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port region. Improved journey reliability could reduce freight delays, lower fuel consumption caused by prolonged idling and enhance supply chain efficiency across western Maharashtra.
Urban planners, however, emphasise that road infrastructure alone cannot address long-term mobility challenges. Sustainable transport outcomes will depend on integrating highway upgrades with metro systems, suburban rail, public bus services and transit-oriented development to balance growing travel demand while limiting congestion and emissions. The project forms part of broader efforts to modernise Maharashtra’s transport infrastructure through targeted investments in strategic corridors supporting regional economic growth. Once completed, the upgraded junction is expected to become a critical link enhancing Pune Mumbai connectivity, improving commuter experience and supporting safer, more resilient movement of people and goods across the metropolitan region.
