Pune: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is advancing plans for six strategic road corridors in the Hinjewadi-Maan-Marunji growth belt, aiming to improve urban mobility, strengthen stormwater infrastructure and reduce chronic traffic congestion in one of the city’s fastest-expanding employment hubs. The initiative is expected to enhance connectivity for thousands of daily commuters while addressing recurring monsoon-related disruptions that have increasingly affected the region’s road network.
The proposed Hinjewadi road project will cover key links connecting residential neighbourhoods, IT campuses and developing urban settlements across Hinjewadi, Maan, Marunji, Wakad and Nande. Together, the corridors are intended to create alternative travel routes that reduce dependence on existing arterial roads, where congestion regularly causes long travel delays during peak office hours. Authorities plan to prepare a comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR) before construction begins. The study will assess traffic demand, pedestrian movement, existing utilities and long-term infrastructure requirements to ensure the roads are designed for future urban growth rather than immediate transport needs alone. Technical investigations will include topographical mapping, geotechnical assessments and detailed surveys of underground utility networks. Beyond road widening, the Hinjewadi road project has been conceived as an integrated urban infrastructure programme. Proposed improvements include upgraded junctions, stormwater drainage systems, sewerage networks, water supply pipelines, electricity infrastructure, utility corridors, street lighting, footpaths, medians, kerbs and road signage. Pavement specifications will be determined according to traffic volumes and local ground conditions to improve durability and reduce long-term maintenance requirements.
Urban planners believe this integrated approach reflects the changing infrastructure needs of Pune’s rapidly urbanising western corridor. Hinjewadi has evolved into one of India’s largest technology and business districts, attracting continuous residential and commercial development. However, transport infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with rising population density, resulting in severe congestion and repeated flooding during periods of intense monsoon rainfall. Experts argue that expanding road capacity alone may not fully resolve mobility challenges unless supported by multimodal transport planning. Improved pedestrian infrastructure, stronger public transport integration, cycling facilities and efficient stormwater management will be equally important to creating resilient urban corridors capable of supporting future growth while reducing dependence on private vehicles. The emphasis on drainage improvements is particularly significant as climate experts warn that western Maharashtra is experiencing increasingly intense rainfall events linked to changing monsoon patterns. Better stormwater infrastructure can reduce waterlogging, improve road safety and minimise disruptions to businesses operating within the region’s technology parks and commercial districts.
As PMRDA moves forward with consultant appointments and technical planning, the project represents a broader shift towards integrated infrastructure delivery rather than standalone road construction. If implemented effectively, the upgraded corridors could improve travel reliability, support economic productivity and enhance everyday mobility for residents while strengthening Pune’s capacity to accommodate continued urban expansion in a more climate-resilient and citizen-focused manner.
