Pune Metro Plans Boost Airport And Ring Links

Pune is preparing for a significant expansion of its urban transport network after key planning decisions were taken to improve Metro connectivity, strengthen road infrastructure and accelerate long-pending mobility projects. The proposed initiatives aim to improve access to the city’s airport, reduce traffic congestion on major corridors and support more integrated public transport as Pune continues to expand.

Among the most significant developments is the proposed Metro link between Kalyani Nagar and Pune Airport, a connection expected to bridge one of the largest gaps in the city’s existing rapid transit system. Once completed, the airport will be directly connected with Metro corridors serving both Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, making public transport a more practical option for air travellers while reducing dependence on private vehicles and taxis. The proposal is expected to move through the required municipal, state and central approval process before implementation. Urban mobility experts believe airport connectivity is an essential component of modern metropolitan transport systems, encouraging greater use of mass transit while lowering road congestion and transport-related emissions.

Attention has also turned to the western suburbs, where authorities have proposed a double-decker structure along sections of the Vanaz-Chandni Chowk Metro extension. The revised concept combines an elevated roadway with the Metro corridor, allowing both transport systems to operate within a shared right of way. The approach is intended to optimise limited urban space while easing chronic congestion along Paud Road, one of Pune’s busiest commuter corridors. Transport planners note that integrating road and rail infrastructure can improve traffic flow without requiring extensive additional land acquisition. However, they emphasise that pedestrian access, cycling infrastructure and efficient feeder transport should also be incorporated to maximise the benefits of large-scale transit investments. Another proposal under consideration is the extension of the planned Shewalewadi-Hadapsar-Katraj Metro corridor towards Chandni Chowk and Wakad. If approved, the expansion would improve connectivity between eastern, southern and western parts of Pune while strengthening links with emerging residential and commercial districts. A detailed project report is expected to assess engineering feasibility, passenger demand and financial viability. Separately, civic authorities have also been directed to move forward with the tendering process for a proposed ring road corridor around Pune. The project is expected to improve regional connectivity by diverting through traffic away from the city centre, reducing travel time and supporting planned urban expansion in peripheral areas.

Urban planners view these projects as part of Pune’s transition towards a more integrated transport network capable of supporting future population growth. They caution, however, that infrastructure expansion must be accompanied by sustainable land-use planning, multimodal integration and equitable access to public transport. As Pune continues to evolve into one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan economies, coordinated investment in Metro infrastructure, road connectivity and climate-responsive mobility systems will play an increasingly important role in improving quality of life, supporting economic activity and creating a more sustainable urban future.
