Pune Metro Line 3, connecting the Hinjewadi IT hub with Shivajinagar, is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, giving daily commuters a new public transport option on one of the city’s important employment corridors. Known as the Pink Line, the 23-kilometre corridor has been built at a cost of more than ₹8,300 crore.
The line will connect Hinjewadi with the District Court Metro station, creating a direct metro link between the technology and employment hub and central Pune. The route is expected to serve thousands of daily travellers who currently depend largely on road-based transport for this journey.
According to the report, the corridor will be operated by women train operators. The move is intended to increase women’s participation in public transport operations and create additional employment opportunities in the sector. The operating model will also place the new line within Pune’s wider effort to expand the role of women in urban mobility services.
The project includes a renewable-energy component. Around 30 per cent of the corridor’s electricity requirement is planned to be met through solar power. This is intended to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources while supporting a lower-emission public transport system. The supplied report does not specify the location, capacity or commissioning timeline of the solar installations.
The fare structure is distance-based. Journeys of up to two kilometres will cost ₹12, while trips between two and four kilometres will cost ₹25. The fare rises to ₹37 for distances between four and eight kilometres, ₹43 for eight to 12 kilometres, ₹49 for 12 to 18 kilometres and ₹62 for journeys longer than 18 kilometres.
The maximum fare is higher than the existing ₹35 maximum fare reported for Pune Metro’s current network. That difference makes the pricing of longer journeys a significant operational detail for commuters travelling across the new corridor, particularly those using the line for regular work trips between Hinjewadi and central Pune.
The Pink Line’s opening is also linked to the next phase of Pune Metro expansion. The Prime Minister is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for four additional corridors under Phase 2, with a combined estimated cost of about ₹13,500 crore. The proposed corridors are Line 2A between Vanaz and Chandni Chowk, Line 2B between Ramwadi and Vitthalwadi, Line 4 between Kharadi and Khadakwasla, and Line 4A between Nal Stop and Manik Baug.
Together, the announced projects are intended to extend Pune’s metro network to more parts of the city and provide alternatives to road travel. The immediate operational milestone is the inauguration of Line 3 and the start of passenger services on the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar connection, while the four Phase 2 corridors remain at the foundation and development stage described in the report.
