Pune Metro Line Three Nears Passenger Launch

Pune’s first public-private metro corridor has moved closer to passenger operations after successfully completing end-to-end trial runs across its full 23-kilometre elevated alignment. The achievement marks a critical stage in the city’s expanding mass transit network, with the corridor expected to strengthen connectivity between the western IT hub and the city centre while supporting lower-emission urban mobility and easing pressure on congested roads. The metro corridor linking Hinjawadi and Shivajinagar has completed its principal civil and systems works, placing the project in its final pre-commissioning phase. Viaduct construction, station structures, track installation, traction electrification and signalling systems have all been completed across the alignment. Remaining work is largely focused on station access, passenger amenities and statutory clearances required before commercial services can begin.

Officials associated with the project indicated that the first operational phase will cover approximately 13.3 kilometres between Maan and the R K Laxman Museum station, incorporating 12 stations. Subject to regulatory approvals, this section is expected to open first before the corridor is extended towards District Court, where it will integrate with the existing Maha Metro network. Such network integration is expected to improve multimodal travel and encourage greater use of public transport across the metropolitan region. The Pune Metro Line Three project is expected to substantially reduce travel time between Shivajinagar and Hinjawadi, one of the region’s busiest employment corridors. Daily journeys that currently take around 90 minutes during peak traffic could be reduced to about 45 minutes, offering productivity gains for commuters and reducing dependence on private vehicles. Urban mobility experts note that faster and more reliable public transport also supports balanced economic growth by improving access to employment, education and commercial centres.

The corridor has also incorporated several features aligned with sustainable urban infrastructure. These include rooftop solar installations, rainwater harvesting systems, electric vehicle charging facilities, solid waste management measures and provisions for last-mile connectivity. Together, these initiatives reflect the growing emphasis on integrating environmental performance into major transport projects rather than treating sustainability as an afterthought. Technology forms another significant component of the project. Communications-Based Train Control systems, modern rolling stock manufactured in India and digital ticketing platforms are expected to improve operational efficiency while supporting higher service reliability and passenger convenience.

The operations strategy also places emphasis on workforce inclusion. The metro services will be operated by a dedicated cadre of trained women train operators, reflecting broader efforts to increase female participation in India’s urban transport sector. Industry observers view such initiatives as important steps towards creating more inclusive public mobility systems alongside physical infrastructure improvements. As Pune continues to expand as a technology and manufacturing hub, efficient mass transit will become increasingly important in managing congestion, improving air quality and supporting sustainable urban growth. The successful completion of trial operations represents an important milestone, but the long-term impact will depend on timely commissioning, seamless network integration and sustained ridership growth.
