Pune Metro Line 3 First Train Arrives

Alstom has achieved a significant milestone with the successful delivery of the first Metropolis metro train for Pune Metro Line 3, under a 2021 contract with the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

This delivery marks a pivotal moment in the development of Pune’s urban transit infrastructure. The project to construct the elevated Pune Metro Line 3 involves a collaboration between Alstom India, TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited, and Siemens Project Ventures, who have been jointly contracted by PMRDA to supply the rolling stock, electrical, and mechanical systems required for the line. As part of this comprehensive contract, Alstom is tasked with manufacturing 22 Metropolis trainsets, each comprising three cars.

Designed to enhance passenger capacity and operational efficiency, each train can accommodate up to 1,000 passengers and will operate at speeds of up to 85 km/h. The route spans 23 kilometres, connecting Hinjewadi’s IT hub with the central business district of Shivajinagar, featuring 23 stations along the way.

Significantly, these trains are entirely Made-in-India, produced at Alstom’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh. This not only underscores the company’s commitment to local manufacturing but also aligns with the broader ‘Make in India’ initiative aimed at fostering domestic production and innovation.

An Alstom official expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We are thrilled to be contributing to this prestigious project by Tata Group. We are confident that our locally manufactured, technologically advanced Metropolis metro trains will play a key role in enhancing the quality of life for citizens and the overall development of the city. Our focus remains on developing sustainable products and solutions that are built to operate efficiently for decades to come.”

The Pune Metro Line 3 is being developed through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between Tata Group and PMRDA. This collaborative approach leverages private sector efficiencies and public oversight to deliver a project that promises to significantly improve urban mobility in Pune.

The delivery of the first Metropolis train is a crucial step forward, setting the stage for subsequent deliveries and the eventual commencement of operations. The new metro line is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and provide a reliable and efficient mode of transport for Pune’s residents.

The successful implementation of this project will serve as a model for future urban transit projects in India, showcasing the potential of locally manufactured, high-tech solutions in meeting the country’s growing transportation needs. As Pune Metro Line 3 progresses towards completion, it stands as a testament to the synergy between innovation, sustainability, and urban development.
