Pune Metro Expansion Promises Faster Daily Commutes
Pune is preparing for a major public transport milestone as the first operational section of the long-awaited Metro Line 3 is expected to open in mid-July, marking a significant step towards improving mobility across the city’s western growth corridor. The launch is anticipated to ease daily travel challenges for thousands of commuters while strengthening Pune’s transition towards a more sustainable and integrated urban transport network. The initial phase covers approximately 12 kilometres of the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar corridor and includes a dozen stations connecting rapidly developing residential and employment zones. Authorities are currently completing final technical and safety requirements before commercial services begin.
The project arrives at a critical moment for Pune, where rapid urbanisation has intensified pressure on road infrastructure. The Hinjawadi technology hub, one of the region’s largest employment centres, experiences severe peak-hour congestion that affects travel times, productivity and environmental quality. Urban mobility experts have long argued that expanding high-capacity public transport is essential to reducing private vehicle dependence and creating a more efficient metropolitan transport system. The Hinjawadi Shivajinagar Metro corridor is designed to serve key residential neighbourhoods, business districts and institutional zones that generate substantial daily commuter movement. By offering a reliable alternative to road-based transport, the project is expected to reduce traffic volumes along some of the city’s most congested routes while improving accessibility for workers, students and residents.
Officials overseeing the project indicate that safety certification remains the final major requirement before passenger operations commence. Following inspections of the completed section, authorities are expected to undertake a final review process in the coming weeks. Subject to approvals, the first trains could begin carrying passengers shortly thereafter. The broader corridor stretches over 23 kilometres and represents one of India’s notable urban transport projects developed through a public-private partnership model. The remaining stations are expected to become operational in a subsequent phase, bringing the entire route into service and expanding connectivity between Pune’s commercial core and its western suburban districts.
Transport planners note that the success of the Hinjawadi Shivajinagar Metro will depend not only on infrastructure delivery but also on integration with other mobility systems. Seamless ticketing, multimodal connections, pedestrian accessibility and last-mile transport solutions will be critical in encouraging widespread adoption.
