Pune: The next phase of Pune Metro expansion has moved closer to execution after Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation initiated the tendering process for the first four stations on the proposed Ramwadi–Wagholi corridor. The development marks an important step towards extending rapid transit into Pune’s eastern growth corridor, where rising residential, commercial and industrial activity has intensified pressure on road infrastructure.
The proposed extension is expected to improve public transport connectivity between Ramwadi and Wagholi, one of Pune’s fastest-growing urban zones. Urban mobility experts say the project could reduce dependence on private vehicles along the Pune–Ahmednagar Road, a corridor that regularly experiences heavy congestion due to office traffic, airport-bound commuters and expanding suburban development. The Pune Metro expansion forms part of a wider strategy to strengthen east-west connectivity across the city. Authorities have invited bids for civil construction of the first four proposed stations—Viman Nagar, Somnath Nagar, Kharadi Bypass and Tulja Bhawani Nagar—covering the initial stretch of the planned extension. Subject to statutory approvals and contract awards, construction activity is expected to commence later this year.
A defining feature of the project is the proposed integration of metro infrastructure with a multi-level transport corridor. Plans include a double-decker structure where road traffic will operate on the lower deck while the metro line will run above, allowing transport capacity to increase without requiring extensive additional land acquisition. Urban planners note that such integrated designs are increasingly being adopted in densely developed cities to optimise limited urban space while reducing disruption during construction. The full corridor is planned to extend approximately 12.5 kilometres and include multiple stations serving residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts and employment centres. Improved access to the city’s airport, information technology hubs and emerging business clusters is expected to support more efficient commuting and encourage greater use of mass transit. Transport specialists also believe that expanding metro connectivity can contribute to wider sustainability goals by lowering vehicle emissions, easing fuel consumption and reducing travel times. However, they caution that the long-term success of the project will depend on seamless integration with feeder buses, pedestrian infrastructure, cycling facilities and last-mile mobility services. Without these supporting systems, metro ridership may not reach its full potential.
The proposed extension is also expected to influence urban development patterns in eastern Pune. While improved connectivity often attracts investment and redevelopment, planners emphasise the importance of balancing growth with affordable housing, environmental safeguards and inclusive public infrastructure to prevent uneven urban expansion. As procurement progresses, the project enters a critical implementation phase. Timely execution, coordinated utility shifting and effective traffic management during construction will determine how quickly residents and businesses experience the intended mobility benefits. If delivered as planned, the Pune Metro expansion could become a key component of the city’s long-term strategy for sustainable transport and climate-resilient urban development.
