Officials have also issued precautionary advisories for communities along the Mutha River as reservoir inflows continue to rise and controlled water releases remain a possibility.

The latest figures indicate that the Khadakwasla dam storage system, comprising Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar reservoirs, has recorded substantial gains following renewed monsoon activity after a prolonged dry spell. The improved reserves significantly ease earlier concerns over drinking water availability, when delayed rainfall had forced civic authorities to consider conservation measures and temporary supply restrictions. Water resource officials are closely monitoring inflows into all four reservoirs as rainfall persists across the Western Ghats. Authorities have also urged people to move livestock, parked vehicles and temporary structures away from vulnerable riverbanks and low-lying zones to minimise risks associated with sudden increases in river discharge. Urban water experts observe that improved Khadakwasla dam storage offers welcome relief for Pune, whose growing population and expanding urban footprint continue to increase annual water demand. Over the past decade, rising residential development, commercial activity and industrial expansion have intensified pressure on the city’s reservoir system, making efficient water management increasingly important. Coordinated dam operations, timely public advisories and resilient drainage infrastructure play an essential role in protecting communities while ensuring water resources are managed safely during periods of heavy rainfall. The latest monsoon recovery demonstrates the dual challenge facing rapidly expanding cities such as Pune—securing sufficient water for future growth while reducing vulnerability to flood risks. As rainfall continues across the region, civic agencies are expected to maintain close coordination with irrigation authorities, monitor reservoir behaviour and issue updated advisories whenever operational conditions change.
