The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proactively identified 127 areas across the city that are susceptible to waterlogging. To address the myriad issues brought on by the monsoon season, the PMC’s disaster management cell has established quick response teams in 15 ward offices. These teams are tasked with resolving rain-related problems that inconvenience citizens and pose risks to public safety.
A PMC official stated, “In the last two days, we have received between 60 and 70 calls concerning issues such as tree falls, waterlogging, fallen light poles, and clogged drains. To manage these issues, we have formed a quick response team of four members in each ward. Additionally, we have a specialised team ready to rescue individuals from building collapses caused by heavy rains. Our department has identified waterlogging-prone locations and is swiftly taking necessary actions.” In anticipation of the monsoon, the civic body has directed the garden department staff in each ward office to trim tree branches to prevent mishaps. As part of their pre-monsoon drive, the PMC has also completed the cleaning of drainage lines. The focus has now shifted to ensuring that drainage systems can effectively handle rainwater and prevent flood-like situations in the city.
The PMC’s comprehensive approach includes mapping out plans to mitigate waterlogging and flooding. This involves identifying key areas where water could overflow and taking preemptive measures to address potential problems before they escalate.
