Pune: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has initiated plans to develop six strategic road corridors across the Hinjewadi-Maan-Marunji growth belt, aiming to reduce chronic traffic congestion, strengthen monsoon resilience and improve connectivity in one of the region’s fastest-growing employment hubs. The proposed infrastructure programme seeks to address long-standing mobility challenges while supporting sustainable urban expansion driven by rapid residential and commercial development.
The planned road network will connect key locations including Surya Hospital, Thakar Vasti, Sakhare Vasti, Marunji, Shani Mandir, Nande, Maan and Wakad through a combination of ring roads and Development Plan (DP) roads. The proposed corridors, ranging between 18 and 36 metres in width, are expected to create alternative travel routes that reduce pressure on existing arterial roads frequently affected by congestion and seasonal flooding. To advance the project, PMRDA has begun the process of appointing a consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and Request for Proposal (RFP). The study will assess traffic demand, pedestrian movement, engineering feasibility and long-term infrastructure requirements before construction plans are finalised. Authorities intend to ensure that the road network supports both present commuter needs and future urban growth.
The Hinjewadi road network project extends beyond road construction by integrating essential civic infrastructure into the design. The DPR will include topographical surveys, geotechnical investigations and utility mapping while recommending improvements to junctions, stormwater drainage, sewerage systems, water supply, electricity distribution, street lighting and underground utility ducts. Engineers will also determine whether rigid or flexible pavement designs are better suited for individual stretches based on soil conditions and anticipated traffic volumes. Urban planners have increasingly highlighted that transportation infrastructure in expanding metropolitan areas must be designed alongside resilient drainage systems rather than as standalone projects. In the Hinjewadi-Maan-Marunji corridor, heavy monsoon rainfall has repeatedly exposed weaknesses in road drainage, resulting in prolonged traffic delays, waterlogging and reduced accessibility for residents and employees working in the area’s information technology parks. The proposed Hinjewadi road network is expected to improve connectivity between residential communities, commercial districts and employment centres while supporting safer pedestrian movement through planned footpaths, medians, kerbs and road signage. Better-designed junctions and integrated civic utilities could also reduce maintenance costs and minimise disruptions caused by repeated excavation of road surfaces.
Industry experts note that improved transport infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as Pune’s western growth corridor continues attracting technology firms, housing developments and supporting businesses. Reliable road connectivity remains critical for economic productivity, logistics efficiency and everyday commuting, particularly in areas experiencing sustained urban expansion. Authorities are expected to review consultant proposals before initiating the next stage of planning. Once completed, the project could become a significant component of Pune’s broader strategy to build climate-resilient transport infrastructure capable of accommodating future growth while improving daily mobility and urban liveability.
