Pune Heat Surge Sets 22-Year October Record at 35.9°C

Pune recorded its hottest October day in 22 years on Saturday, with the Shivajinagar weather station registering a maximum temperature of 35.9°C, according to India Meteorological Department data cited by the Times of India. The reading was 4°C above normal and marked the city’s highest October maximum since 2003.

The previous higher October reading at the Shivajinagar station was 36.9°C, recorded on October 7, 2002. Weather experts from the Vagaries of Weather blog said Saturday’s temperature was the highest October maximum recorded at the station since that peak.

The heat was not confined to central Pune. IMD data showed elevated daytime temperatures across several monitoring stations in the district, indicating a widespread heat surge rather than an isolated reading at Shivajinagar.

Wadgaon Sheri recorded a maximum of 35.5°C, while Baramati and the National Defence Academy station recorded 35.4°C each. Talegaon registered 35.3°C and Hadapsar recorded 34.8°C.

Other monitoring stations also reported temperatures above 34°C. Pashan-AWS recorded 34.5°C, followed by Chinchwad at 34.4°C and Magarpatta at 34°C. The distribution of high readings across different parts of the district placed daytime conditions well above seasonal averages in both the urban area and surrounding locations.

For residents, the readings indicate an unusually warm daytime spell during a month when temperatures are generally expected to moderate after the monsoon. The available report does not specify any heat-related health advisories, emergency measures or changes to municipal operations linked to the temperature surge.

The immediate official record remains the Shivajinagar maximum of 35.9°C, while the monitoring data show that the higher temperatures extended across multiple stations. Further updates from the IMD would establish whether the spell continues and whether subsequent readings challenge Saturday’s October record.
