Pune Gets Major Push In Maharashtra Mobility Plans

Pune is set for a major infrastructure expansion after Maharashtra approved a ₹10,502.36 crore eastern extension of the Pune Ring Road as part of a wider ₹28,227 crore transport investment package. The 31.805-km access-controlled corridor is intended to shift inter-city and inter-state traffic away from built-up areas, potentially easing pressure on Pune’s congested roads while reshaping development along the city’s eastern edge.

The proposed Ring Road will have three lanes in each direction and is planned for a maximum speed of 120 kmph. Its engineering package includes tunnels, bridges, viaducts, flyovers and interchanges, reflecting the scale of infrastructure required to move high volumes of traffic around, rather than through, the urban core. For Pune, the project could be particularly important for freight movement. The city and its surrounding region have developed into major manufacturing, technology and logistics centres, generating significant movement of commercial vehicles. Diverting long-distance traffic from inner roads could reduce pressure on junctions and arterial routes used daily by residents. However, the benefits of a ring road will depend heavily on how the surrounding land is managed. Large access-controlled highways can increase the attractiveness of peripheral land for warehouses, industrial facilities and housing. Without coordinated land-use planning and public transport connections, this can produce dispersed development and longer daily journeys.

The project is therefore not simply a road-building exercise. Its success will also depend on whether local authorities protect existing settlements, agricultural areas and environmentally sensitive land while controlling unplanned construction around interchanges. The Maharashtra government has approved the Pune project alongside Metro Line 13 in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The ₹17,724.99 crore metro corridor will connect Mira-Bhayandar with Vasai-Virar across 25.03 km, with 16 stations and a major road-and-metro bridge over Vasai Creek. The contrast between the two investments is significant. Mumbai’s project prioritises high-capacity public transport for expanding suburban populations, while Pune’s ring road is primarily designed to improve road-based regional connectivity. For Pune, the challenge will be ensuring that additional highway capacity complements rather than undermines efforts to strengthen buses, rail and other lower-emission modes.

Urban mobility experts note that congestion cannot be permanently solved by adding road capacity alone. Efficient public transport, safe walking and cycling infrastructure, and better freight planning are equally important as the metropolitan region expands. The Pune Ring Road could deliver substantial benefits if construction is matched by disciplined land-use planning and strong connections to existing transport networks. The longer-term measure of success will be whether the investment reduces travel pressure for residents and businesses without simply shifting congestion and environmental costs to Pune’s expanding outskirts.
