Pune’s civic administration has reset completion targets for two delayed traffic projects, putting the Vishrantwadi flyover and grade separator on a December 2026 deadline and the Shastrinagar project on a March 2027 target. The move matters beyond traffic relief: both corridors serve major residential, employment and airport-linked routes, making construction delays a daily cost for commuters and businesses.
At Vishrantwadi Junction, the latest deadline comes after the project missed its earlier March 2026 target. The remaining work has been complicated by construction constraints around the busy junction, where traffic management and access remain important considerations. The immediate challenge is less about announcing another target and more about clearing physical and administrative constraints. Civic officials have identified temple structures, roadside encroachments and utility shifting as obstacles to the remaining work. The municipal administration has asked the agencies, property stakeholders and contractor involved to resolve the key issues within a month. The Vishrantwadi project is intended to separate traffic movements around Alandi Road, Airport Road and routes towards Dhanori, Lohegaon and Pune airport. Its value, however, should be measured by more than faster vehicle movement. A properly completed junction must also retain safe pedestrian access and minimise disruption for street vendors and other small businesses that depend on the corridor.
The second deadline concerns the proposed flyover and grade separator at Shastrinagar Chowk on Nagar Road. The project has faced a longer gestation period, with preliminary work and surveys preceding construction. Traffic-diversion requirements and coordination between agencies have added to the execution challenge. Earlier planning also involved archaeological clearances because of the project’s proximity to the Aga Khan Palace. The Shastrinagar scheme is significant because Nagar Road is a major east Pune corridor connecting several established and rapidly developing residential and employment districts. Previous traffic-diversion exercises around the junction have demonstrated how construction itself can worsen congestion if alternative routes are not planned carefully.
For Pune flyover projects, the central test is therefore execution rather than another revised deadline. Utility relocation, traffic management, pedestrian safety and timely coordination between departments will determine whether the schemes deliver their intended benefits. The next few months will show whether the new targets translate into measurable progress. For residents, the outcome should ultimately be safer and more predictable movement across the city, rather than simply another increase in road capacity.
