Pune: A government-supported app-based fixed fare taxi service has begun operations across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, introducing a regulated mobility option that follows Regional Transport Office-approved fare structures. The initiative seeks to improve affordability, transparency and commuter confidence by eliminating variable pricing during peak demand, while expanding access to reliable urban and intercity transport.

The new platform enters Pune’s rapidly growing app-based mobility ecosystem at a time when demand for predictable transport costs continues to rise. Daily commuters, office workers, students and late-night travellers have frequently raised concerns over fluctuating fares during traffic congestion, adverse weather and festival periods. By adhering to officially notified fare rates, the service aims to create greater certainty in trip planning while reducing fare-related disputes between passengers and drivers. Officials associated with the initiative said the platform has attracted substantial driver participation during its initial rollout, creating a broad operating network across Pune and neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad. The digital booking model is also designed to minimise passenger waiting times, improving first- and last-mile connectivity for users travelling to railway stations, metro corridors, bus terminals and commercial districts.

The fixed fare taxi service follows kilometre-based tariffs approved by transport authorities for different vehicle categories, including auto-rickshaws, two-wheelers offering pillion rides, sedans and sport utility vehicles. Unlike dynamic pricing systems commonly used by private aggregators, fares remain unchanged regardless of traffic conditions or periods of high demand. Urban mobility experts suggest such regulated pricing can improve public trust, particularly among passengers who rely on app-based transport for routine commuting. Beyond city operations, the service has also introduced intercity connectivity beginning with the Pune–Mumbai corridor, with additional routes linking Pune to Nashik, Solapur and Kolhapur expected in subsequent phases. Transport planners believe expanding organised road mobility between major urban centres could strengthen regional economic integration by improving access for business travellers, students and tourists while complementing existing public transport services. Mobility specialists note that digital transport platforms operating under transparent pricing frameworks can contribute to a more balanced urban transport ecosystem. However, they emphasise that long-term success will depend on service reliability, vehicle availability, driver welfare, passenger safety standards and seamless integration with wider public transport networks rather than pricing alone.

The initiative also reflects a broader shift towards regulated digital mobility solutions that seek to balance commuter interests with operational sustainability. As Pune’s population and travel demand continue to grow, transport authorities are expected to closely monitor passenger adoption, service quality and network performance.
