Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar directed officials to immediately address complaints raised by students during an inspection of a Backward Classes Welfare Department post-matric boys’ hostel near the Housing Board area in Kanakapura, Ramanagara district.
During his visit on the night of September 13, Shivakumar had dinner with the students and asked about their wellbeing and the facilities available at the hostel. The students told him that they had not yet received bed sheets and that bedbugs were present in the hostel.
The students also said that they had not been provided medicine to control the bedbug problem. They further complained that buses were not stopping near the hostel, forcing them to walk to college.
After hearing the complaints, Shivakumar questioned Ramanagara Deputy Commissioner Yashwanth V. Gurukar and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Anmol Jain about why the facilities had not been provided and why the issues had been delayed.
He subsequently instructed the officials to examine the students’ complaints immediately and resolve them. The reported grievances cover both basic hostel standards and access to public transport, linking the quality of student accommodation with the daily commute faced by residents.
The visit took place during Shivakumar’s visit to his native place for the Gowri–Ganesha festival. According to the report, he was also scheduled to offer prayers at his father’s memorial and visit his family deity’s temple and other locations. The officials’ action on the hostel complaints is the next stated step in the matter.
