Pune FDA Suspends Licences of 6 Domino’s Outlets Over Hygiene Violations

The Pune Food and Drug Administration has suspended the licences of six Domino’s Pizza outlets and two other food establishments after inspections found serious food-safety and hygiene violations, including live cockroaches, dead insect remains and improper food storage.

The action covers Domino’s outlets at Warje, Hingne Khurd, Chakan and near KEM Hospital in Pune, as well as outlets in Rajarampuri and Sambhajinagar in Kolhapur. The two other establishments named in the action are Special Tupatil Sabudana Vade in Shivajinagar and M/s Yasin Food Centre in Wagholi.

According to a report by Lokmat – Pune, the FDA conducted special inspections of more than 50 Domino’s establishments across the Pune division over the past four days. The inspections were focused on compliance with food-safety and hygiene requirements at the outlets.

The report said inspectors found live cockroaches and remains of dead cockroaches in some kitchens and food-storage areas. Other deficiencies included improper storage of food items, inadequate cleaning and sanitation, and a lack of proper separation between equipment used to handle vegetarian and non-vegetarian food.

Inspectors also found incomplete temperature records for food received by the establishments. Temperature monitoring is used to document the handling of food during receiving and storage, and incomplete records were listed among the deficiencies identified during the inspections.

The FDA report cited further problems in some premises, including an odour coming from customer dining-area toilets and the absence of prescribed identity cards for food-delivery workers. The findings indicate that the inspections covered not only kitchen conditions but also storage, sanitation records, equipment practices and operational compliance.

The licence suspensions apply to the eight establishments identified in the report. The supplied information does not specify the duration of the suspensions, the financial penalties, or whether the affected outlets will be permitted to reopen after corrective action and follow-up inspections.

The inspections form part of the FDA’s wider checks on food establishments in the Pune division. The department said hotels, restaurants, branded food chains and establishments involved in online food delivery would be examined for compliance with food-safety and hygiene rules.

The action also brings attention to the enforcement challenge created by the scale and variety of urban food services. Consumers increasingly rely on restaurants, branded chains and delivery establishments, while regulatory oversight must assess conditions that are not visible at the point of purchase. In this case, the FDA’s inspections extended across more than 50 outlets linked to one food chain in four days.

The FDA said action against establishments violating food-safety and hygiene requirements would continue. Further inspections and the compliance steps required before suspended licences can be restored are the next official milestones.
