Pune Farmers Adopt Soil First Farming Methods

A scientific outreach initiative in Pune’s agricultural hinterland is drawing attention to a growing concern in Indian farming: declining soil health and rising cultivation costs. Agricultural experts recently engaged with farmers in Khed taluka to promote resource-efficient farming methods, highlighting the importance of balanced nutrient use and long-term soil conservation in sustaining crop productivity and rural livelihoods. The programme, held in Kharpudi village, focused on strengthening awareness around sustainable farming practices at a time when agricultural regions across Maharashtra are facing increasing pressure from soil degradation, volatile input prices and changing climatic conditions. For flower-growing communities that depend on intensive cultivation systems, maintaining soil fertility has become critical to both economic viability and environmental resilience.

During field interactions, scientists and agricultural specialists discussed the need to move away from excessive dependence on chemical fertilisers and towards a more balanced approach to nutrient management. Experts explained that matching fertiliser application with soil conditions and crop requirements can improve productivity while reducing unnecessary expenditure on farm inputs. The Pune sustainable farming drive also highlighted the role of Integrated Nutrient Management, a cultivation approach that combines organic and inorganic nutrient sources to maintain soil quality over time. According to agricultural researchers, such practices can enhance nutrient efficiency, reduce environmental stress and improve the long-term health of farming ecosystems.

Demonstrations conducted during the programme showcased alternative nutrient sources including compost, farmyard manure, vermicompost and crop residue recycling. Specialists also introduced farmers to biological soil enhancers that support nutrient availability and strengthen microbial activity within agricultural land. These interventions are increasingly being viewed as important tools for reducing dependence on synthetic inputs while improving the resilience of agricultural production systems. Particular attention was given to floriculture farms, where experts assessed crop conditions and reviewed existing nutrient management practices. Flower cultivation remains an important source of income in several parts of Pune district, supplying markets across Maharashtra and beyond. However, growers continue to face challenges ranging from increasing input costs and pest pressures to fluctuations in demand and market access.  Industry observers note that sustainable production methods are becoming increasingly relevant for high-value horticulture sectors. As urban markets expand and environmental concerns gain prominence, consumers and supply chains are placing greater emphasis on resource-efficient agricultural practices. Maintaining soil fertility and reducing ecological stress are therefore emerging as important economic as well as environmental priorities.

The Pune sustainable farming drive also carried a broader message for rural development. Experts suggest that strengthening soil health can contribute to improved water retention, lower input dependency and greater resilience against climate variability. Such outcomes are particularly important as regions surrounding rapidly expanding urban centres face growing pressure on land and natural resources.As Maharashtra seeks to balance agricultural growth with environmental sustainability, initiatives that connect scientific research with on-ground farming practices may play an increasingly important role.
