Pune Expands Local Manufacturing For Critical Cooling

Pune is gaining new manufacturing capacity for specialised cooling equipment used in data centres and large commercial facilities, as India’s digital infrastructure expands. A new 13,826-square-metre production facility associated with FläktGroup has been established in the city, with planned annual capacity of up to 6,500 units. The development places greater emphasis on local supply chains for the energy-intensive cooling systems required by next-generation digital infrastructure.

The facility includes manufacturing, engineering, office and support areas and was developed in roughly six months, according to company information. Its product portfolio includes air handling units, fan-wall systems and precision cooling equipment used in environments where temperature and air quality must be tightly controlled. The timing reflects a broader shift in India’s infrastructure market. National data-centre capacity increased from around 375 MW in 2020 to approximately 1,500 MW in 2025, according to the Union government. As computing demand rises, cooling has become a critical part of the physical infrastructure supporting cloud services, artificial intelligence and digital businesses. For Pune, the Pune HVAC manufacturing expansion is significant because the city already has a large industrial and technology ecosystem. Local production can reduce dependence on long-distance supply chains and potentially shorten delivery periods for large infrastructure projects. Pune’s industrial corridors and connectivity to western India also make it a logical manufacturing location for equipment serving both domestic and regional markets.

Yet the growth of cooling infrastructure brings its own sustainability questions. HVAC systems are essential for data centres, but they can also add substantially to electricity demand. Cooling efficiency therefore matters as much as the physical expansion of computing capacity. The Union government has noted that the data-centre industry is adopting advanced cooling technologies to reduce water consumption, an important consideration as cities face growing competition for freshwater. This is particularly relevant for Pune, where electricity demand has already come under pressure during periods of extreme summer heat. Recent local reporting put peak city demand at around 2,900–3,000 MW during the summer, compared with roughly 2,500 MW in other seasons. The industrial opportunity is therefore accompanied by an infrastructure challenge. New data centres require dependable electricity, fibre connectivity, water management and transport access. If these requirements expand faster than public infrastructure, the economic benefits of digital investment can also create additional pressure on urban resources.

Industry experts say the next phase of data-centre development will increasingly favour efficient cooling, lower-water designs and better integration with renewable power. Such choices can reduce operating costs while limiting the environmental footprint of expanding digital infrastructure. The Pune HVAC manufacturing ecosystem could benefit from this shift if local production is matched by stronger standards for energy and water performance. For the city, the larger question is not simply how much cooling equipment can be manufactured, but whether the infrastructure it supports can grow without placing disproportionate pressure on electricity, water and surrounding communities. As Pune strengthens its position in India’s digital and industrial economy, efficient cooling will increasingly become part of the city’s wider resilience equation. Local manufacturing can improve supply-chain capacity, but long-term value will depend on how efficiently that equipment helps new infrastructure operate.
