The Greater Chennai Corporation’s 75-day Chennai anti-rabies drive has vaccinated 1,00,378 stray dogs since its launch on August 11, taking the civic campaign past the halfway mark towards its target of two lakh dogs across the city.
The campaign combines anti-rabies vaccination with medication to control internal and external parasites. The civic body is deploying 30 mobile teams across Chennai’s zones as part of the drive, which was initially launched in Tiruvottiyur, Manali and Tondiarpet before being extended to other parts of the city.
Ambattur has recorded the highest number of vaccinations so far, with 21,844 dogs covered. Madhavaram follows with 15,038 vaccinations, while Tondiarpet has reported 12,477 and Tiruvottiyur 12,313. Anna Nagar has recorded 11,895 vaccinations, followed by Royapuram with 8,598 and Manali with 7,200.
The campaign has also covered 4,343 stray dogs in Alandur. Vaccination work is currently under way in Kodambakkam, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar and Perungudi, according to the details reported by the Greater Chennai Corporation campaign.
The zone-wise figures show how the municipal programme is being rolled out through targeted field teams rather than a single citywide operation conducted at one location. This approach allows vaccination work to continue across different parts of Chennai while teams move through areas with larger stray-dog populations.
The corporation’s stated objective is to vaccinate two lakh stray dogs during the 75-day campaign. With 1,00,378 dogs covered as of September 25, the drive has completed just over half of that target. The remaining vaccination work will continue in the zones where operations are under way and in other areas covered by the mobile teams.
The campaign is part of the civic body’s municipal public-health and animal-management responsibilities. Its progress is being tracked through the number of dogs vaccinated in individual zones, with Ambattur currently recording the highest total. Vaccination and parasite-control work will continue as the Greater Chennai Corporation moves towards completing its 75-day programme.
