Pune ESIC Medical College has received approval for 50 MBBS seats from the 2027-28 academic year, adding a new medical education institution to the city’s healthcare infrastructure. The approval was granted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College and Hospital, Pune.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the decision in a post on X on 14 October. He said the new college would create additional opportunities for students seeking admission to MBBS programmes and increase the number of doctors in Maharashtra.
“The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has approved a new medical college with 50 MBBS seats for ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Pune; from the academic year 2027-28 onwards,” Fadnavis wrote. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda for the approval and described it as a “Navratri gift to Maharashtra”.
The approval comes as the National Medical Commission processes applications for establishing new medical colleges and increasing MBBS intake capacity for the 2027-28 academic year. The commission published the relevant notice on 8 October 2026.
ESIC operates medical education institutions alongside healthcare facilities serving insured employees and their families. The Pune approval therefore links the expansion of medical education with the corporation’s existing healthcare infrastructure in the city. The supplied announcement does not provide details of the college’s campus expansion, faculty recruitment, hospital capacity or construction schedule.
The Union government had announced further measures to expand ESIC’s medical education infrastructure in June 2026. Those measures included in-principle approval for a new ESIC medical college in Haridwar, also with 50 MBBS admissions from the 2027-28 academic year.
For Pune, the immediate confirmed change is the addition of 50 MBBS seats from the next academic session. The approval is expected to increase the number of medical education places available in the city, while further information on admissions, eligibility, fee structure and academic operations will have to be issued through the relevant official channels.
The next formal steps will involve the publication of admission and operational details for the 2027-28 academic year by the competent authorities.
