Telangana Medical Colleges Get ₹379 Crore Boost for Expansion

Telangana medical colleges will receive a combined investment of around ₹632 crore for infrastructure development after the Centre approved ₹379.29 crore under a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, with the funding linked to the addition of 465 postgraduate seats across 26 government medical colleges over two years.

The Union health ministry communicated its approval on Thursday, according to the Telangana health minister’s office. The proposals had been submitted by the state government for the development of government medical colleges and their affiliated hospitals.

The Centre’s allocation averages ₹81.57 lakh for each additional postgraduate seat. The Telangana government will contribute another ₹253 crore, taking the total investment for the postgraduate expansion to approximately ₹632 crore.

The funding comes as the state has expanded postgraduate medical education across its government institutions. The 465 additional postgraduate seats are spread across 26 government medical colleges, increasing the infrastructure requirements of both the colleges and their affiliated hospitals.

The approval is part of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme, under which the Union government will support infrastructure development proposed by the state. The supplied announcement does not specify the individual colleges receiving the ₹379.29 crore allocation, the works to be undertaken at each institution or the implementation timeline.

Separately, the National Medical Commission has approved an increase of 110 MBBS seats across the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Adilabad and state-run medical colleges in Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar and Siddipet.

The state government will undertake infrastructure improvement works worth ₹108 crore at these four colleges and their affiliated hospitals. Of this amount, the Centre will provide ₹64 crore, while the remaining contribution will come from the state government. The announcement does not detail the specific construction, equipment or hospital-capacity works covered by the allocation.

The two funding decisions link expansion of medical education with upgrades to the public institutions that must accommodate additional students and postgraduate training. They also cover both postgraduate capacity across 26 colleges and undergraduate capacity at four government medical colleges.

The immediate implementation responsibility will rest with the Telangana government, which submitted the proposals and will provide its share of the funding. The Union health ministry’s approval clears the central assistance under the scheme, while the National Medical Commission’s decision establishes the additional MBBS seats at the four named institutions.
