Pune Electric Bus Expansion Boosts Public Mobility

Pune: Public transport electrification in Maharashtra is set to accelerate after a new procurement of 650 electric buses was confirmed for deployment across Pune and Mumbai under the Central government’s PM E-Drive Phase II programme. The large-scale fleet addition is expected to strengthen sustainable urban mobility, improve public transport reliability and support cleaner air in two of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions.

The Pune Electric Bus Programme forms part of a broader national strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuel-powered public transport while modernising city bus networks. Under the latest procurement, nine-metre electric buses in both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned configurations will be introduced into the fleets of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), expanding zero-emission transport options for millions of daily commuters. For Pune, where rapid urban expansion has increased pressure on roads and public transport infrastructure, the additional electric buses are expected to improve fleet availability while reducing local air pollution and traffic-related emissions. Public transport experts believe electrification of bus services is becoming increasingly important as cities attempt to balance growing travel demand with commitments to lower carbon emissions and healthier urban environments.

Unlike smaller demonstration projects, the deployment of hundreds of electric buses offers transport authorities an opportunity to evaluate operational performance across high-frequency urban routes. Industry observers note that large fleets generate valuable information on charging infrastructure, battery performance, maintenance schedules, energy consumption and service reliability, enabling authorities to optimise future investments in electric mobility. The Pune Electric Bus Programme also reflects the evolving role of central and state-backed procurement models in accelerating clean transport adoption. By aggregating demand across multiple cities, such initiatives can improve procurement efficiency, lower lifecycle costs and encourage wider adoption of advanced mobility technologies within public transport systems. Urban planners argue that electric buses deliver benefits beyond emissions reduction. Quieter operations help reduce urban noise pollution, while smoother vehicle performance can improve passenger comfort. When integrated with metro rail, suburban rail and conventional bus networks, electric buses strengthen multimodal transport systems and encourage commuters to shift away from private vehicles, easing congestion and improving overall transport efficiency.

The transition, however, will require parallel investments in charging stations, power infrastructure, depot modernisation and workforce training. Transport specialists emphasise that long-term success depends not only on vehicle procurement but also on reliable operations, effective maintenance systems and uninterrupted energy supply capable of supporting expanding electric fleets. As Pune continues investing in metro expansion and sustainable mobility initiatives, the latest fleet addition represents another step towards a lower-emission transport network. The deployment is expected to contribute to cleaner air, greater operational efficiency and more resilient public transport infrastructure while supporting the city’s long-term transition towards climate-responsive urban development.
