Pune Civic Body Faces Allegations of Payment Without Performance

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) finds itself embroiled in controversy following allegations raised by senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader regarding payments made for civic works that allegedly never materialized. In response to these serious claims, Pune’s Municipal Commissioner has taken decisive action, ordering an immediate inquiry into the matter.

The allegations surfaced during a meeting attended by Pune’s Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, where Bidkar highlighted discrepancies in PMC’s financial disbursements. Specifically, Bidkar claimed that despite PMC having allocated funds for 22 civic projects, no tangible work has been executed on the ground. “I have submitted a detailed list of these contracts to the municipal commissioner,” the leader stated, underscoring concerns over potential financial mismanagement within the civic administration. Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the Municipal Commissioner instructed Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B P to lead the inquiry, signaling a proactive approach to address the allegations swiftly and transparently.  PMC’s operational integrity were further underscored during the meeting, where BJP representatives queried various aspects of the municipality’s administrative efficacy. In a separate development, the Municipal Commissioner responded to directives from Minister Mohol by instructing PMC’s anti-encroachment department to initiate an enforcement drive. Despite staffing challenges due to personnel reallocations, officials affirmed their commitment to commence the campaign promptly.

“The anti-encroachment department is currently understaffed following transfers to other departments, particularly the property tax division,” officials clarified. “However, efforts are underway to mobilize resources and adhere to the directive.” This incident has cast a spotlight on governance and accountability within Pune’s civic infrastructure projects, raising pertinent questions about financial oversight and the execution of public contracts. As the inquiry progresses, stakeholders await concrete findings that will shape future governance practices and uphold public trust in municipal affairs. The developments in Pune serve as a stark reminder of the importance of transparency and efficiency in managing public funds, emphasizing the need for robust mechanisms to prevent and address allegations of financial irregularities promptly.
