Pune Bus Network Expands For Pandharpur Rush

Pune: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has expanded its bus network across Pune district ahead of the Ashadhi Ekadashi pilgrimage, scheduling 350 additional services to Pandharpur between July 21 and July 26. The move is aimed at managing the seasonal surge in passenger demand while ensuring safer, more organised public transport during one of Maharashtra’s largest annual religious gatherings.

The additional Ashadhi Ekadashi Bus Services will operate from Pune’s Swargate bus terminal as well as major taluka depots across the district. Transport officials expect a substantial rise in pilgrim movement as devotees travel to Pandharpur for the annual Wari, prompting the state-run operator to strengthen connectivity and reduce overcrowding on regular routes. Round-the-clock bus operations have been planned during the peak travel period, particularly on July 23 and 24, enabling passengers to travel to and from Pandharpur throughout the day and night. Officials believe continuous services will help distribute passenger demand more evenly, reducing waiting times and easing pressure on bus stations during the busiest days of the pilgrimage. To improve travel comfort, the transport undertaking has allocated newer buses, including premium and upgraded fleet categories, for several of the additional services. Existing fare concessions for eligible groups, including senior citizens, women travelling under state welfare schemes and students, will remain applicable during the special operations.

Transport planners note that large-scale religious events place exceptional pressure on regional mobility systems. Strengthening public transport during such periods not only improves accessibility for pilgrims but also helps limit the number of private vehicles entering already congested corridors. This can contribute to smoother traffic movement, lower emissions and safer road conditions, particularly along highways connecting Pune and Pandharpur.
