Pune Bridge Deadline Puts Urban Mobility Under Focus
Pune’s long-delayed Sadhu Vaswani railway overbridge has been given a fresh December 2026 completion target as construction moves into its most technically sensitive phase. The rebuilt crossing is expected to restore a key connection between Pune Cantonment, Koregaon Park and the eastern parts of the city. Its progress matters not only to motorists but also to the wider movement of people, goods and public services across a congested urban corridor.
The Sadhu Vaswani bridge is being rebuilt by the Pune Municipal Corporation after the previous structure was demolished. The crossing forms an important link between areas including Camp, Ghorpadi, Koregaon Park, Bund Garden, Yerawada and the airport-side corridor. Its prolonged absence has shifted traffic onto alternative routes, adding pressure to already busy junctions. The immediate construction challenge is the railway section. The new structure includes an approximately 54-metre open-web girder over the tracks. More than 240 train movements reportedly take place on the route each day, leaving limited scope for disruption and requiring close coordination between the civic administration and railway authorities.
Recent work has focused on clearing overhead structures that obstruct construction across the railway alignment. A civic tender issued earlier this year also covered the removal of a 1,000-mm water pipeline and its supporting steel structure crossing the railway track near Koregaon Park. The intervention shows how utility networks can become critical dependencies in major urban transport projects. Once the railway span is launched, work on the remaining spans is expected to progress concurrently. The latest target follows earlier completion expectations that were not met. Construction has faced a combination of railway permissions, traffic restrictions and weather-related interruptions. Earlier reporting had placed completion in March 2026, underscoring the gap between project schedules and delivery on complex city infrastructure. For residents, reopening the bridge could reduce the need for circuitous journeys between eastern neighbourhoods and central Pune. But the project’s value should not be measured only by how quickly vehicles move. A durable transport strategy would also examine pedestrian access, cycling safety, public transport integration and junction management around the approaches.
The bridge also offers a broader lesson for Pune’s infrastructure planning. Replacing ageing structures can improve safety and capacity, but new crossings can generate additional traffic unless they are planned as part of a wider mobility network. Better coordination between roads, railways, utilities and public transport can reduce construction delays while limiting repeated excavation and disruption. The December deadline therefore represents more than a construction milestone. For commuters who have adapted to years of diversions, it is a test of whether a critical urban connection can finally be delivered with the safety, reliability and multimodal access expected from modern city infrastructure.
