Pune: The city’s latest environmental assessment has highlighted a steady deterioration in air quality, with rising concentrations of fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide reinforcing concerns over the public health impacts of rapid urbanisation. The findings suggest that while Pune has made progress in expanding cleaner public transport and electric mobility, growing vehicular traffic, construction activity and urban emissions continue to offset these gains, posing fresh challenges for sustainable city planning.
The Pune Municipal Corporation’s Environment Status Report for 2025–26 indicates that air pollution has remained a persistent urban concern over the past five years. Annual monitoring data shows increasing levels of PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), pollutants closely associated with traffic emissions, construction dust and waste burning. Environmental experts warn that prolonged exposure to these pollutants increases the likelihood of respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular disease and reduced overall urban liveability. The Pune air quality report identifies Shivajinagar and Hadapsar among the city’s most pollution-affected locations, with elevated concentrations of particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide recorded during the monitoring period. Several monitoring stations also exceeded national standards for PM10, indicating that coarse dust particles remain a significant environmental concern across multiple urban zones.
Urban planners say the findings reflect the cumulative effects of rapid population growth, expanding road networks and intensified construction activity. Increasing surface development, coupled with traffic congestion and limited natural ventilation in densely built neighbourhoods, has contributed to worsening air quality despite improvements in cleaner mobility infrastructure. The report also notes that ground-level ozone concentrations have gradually increased at several monitoring locations, adding another layer of concern for vulnerable populations during warmer months. At the same time, the assessment highlights encouraging progress in cleaner transport adoption. Registrations of battery-powered vehicles have risen sharply over the past year, while the city’s public transport operator has continued expanding its electric bus fleet. These measures are expected to reduce transport-related emissions over the longer term, although experts emphasise that cleaner vehicles alone will not sufficiently improve urban air quality without complementary measures targeting dust control, waste management and land-use planning. The Pune air quality report recommends wider adoption of cleaner fuels by commercial establishments, stricter enforcement against open waste burning and the deployment of sensor-based dust monitoring systems at major construction sites. Urban policy specialists also advocate increased urban tree cover, better pedestrian infrastructure and stronger public transport integration to reduce dependence on private vehicles.
Carbon monoxide levels have largely remained within permissible limits across monitoring stations, although traffic-heavy corridors continue to register relatively higher concentrations during peak hours. Experts caution that while annual averages remain compliant with standards, localised exposure during congestion periods can still affect public health. As Pune continues to expand as a technology, education and manufacturing hub, the report underscores the importance of integrating environmental safeguards into future development decisions. Strengthening emission controls, improving urban planning and accelerating climate-resilient infrastructure will be essential to ensuring economic growth does not come at the cost of cleaner air and healthier communities.
