Pune: A new financing initiative aimed at accelerating AI in sugarcane farming is set to expand precision agriculture across Pune district, with a ₹1,000 crore loan programme focusing on digital technologies, micro-irrigation and data-driven farm management. The initiative reflects a broader shift towards climate-resilient agriculture, where technology is increasingly being deployed to improve crop productivity while optimising the use of water and other natural resources.
The programme seeks to support the adoption of artificial intelligence-based cultivation practices across nearly 50,000 hectares of sugarcane. The financing framework is expected to enable farmers to invest in digital advisory systems, automated irrigation infrastructure, soil monitoring technologies and weather-based decision-support tools that can improve farming efficiency under changing climatic conditions. Agricultural experts note that AI in sugarcane farming enables growers to make informed decisions based on real-time field conditions rather than conventional farming practices. By analysing soil moisture, weather forecasts and crop health data, artificial intelligence can recommend optimal irrigation schedules, fertiliser application and pest management, reducing input costs while improving productivity and crop quality. The scheme will be implemented with technical support from agricultural research and extension institutions, ensuring that farmers receive scientific guidance alongside financial assistance. Officials involved in the programme expect the combination of affordable credit and technical expertise to accelerate the adoption of precision farming practices among both small and large cultivators.
Under the financing model, farmers can access loans to install drip irrigation systems, automated fertigation equipment and digital monitoring technologies. Micro-irrigation has been made a mandatory component of the programme, reflecting increasing concern over efficient water use in one of Maharashtra’s most important cash crops. Larger farms may also invest in weather stations and soil moisture sensors that provide continuous field-level data for better crop management. The investment requirements vary depending on farm size and technology adoption. Weather monitoring stations require significant upfront expenditure, while soil moisture sensors and AI-enabled advisory platforms involve additional installation and annual service costs. Loan repayments are expected to be spread over several years, allowing farmers to recover investments through improved productivity before completing repayment.
