Pulicat Bridge Delay Forces 20km Detour

Chennai: The long-standing absence of a bridge connecting Pulicat and Karungali village in Tiruvallur district is imposing significant hardships on the residents of 20 villages, as well as local fishermen and tourists.

Without this crucial infrastructure, locals are compelled to take a 20-kilometre detour to reach Chennai city. This bridge is vital at the junction where the Kosasthalayar River and the Buckingham Canal meet the sea. D Durai Mahendran, a local resident and the state president of the Tamil Nadu Fishermen’s Association in Pulicat, highlighted the severe impact on fishermen, farmers, and villagers who need to sell their produce or commute to the city for work. The monsoon season exacerbates the situation, making it perilous to cross the flooded areas, posing a significant risk to lives, especially for children. Residents have been advocating for the construction of this bridge for several years. Despite the state highways department submitting a proposal for the project, progress has stalled. A senior engineer from the department confirmed that the villagers have been requesting a bridge at the confluence point of the river and the canal. The department has sought government funding to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) to proceed with physical measurements and alignment planning for the proposed bridge.

The construction of the bridge is a complex process, requiring clearances from multiple government departments. These include the state coastal zone management authority, the state wildlife authorities due to the proximity of the Pulicat Bird Sanctuary, and the Water Resources Department for the river and canal crossing. Additionally, the central inland water authority’s approval is necessary. The delay in the bridge construction is causing substantial inconvenience, forcing residents into lengthy and dangerous detours. Immediate attention and coordinated efforts from various government bodies are essential to expedite this project and improve the quality of life for the residents of Pulicat and surrounding villages. The completion of this bridge will not only enhance connectivity but also significantly boost local economic activities by providing safer and more efficient routes for commuting and transportation of goods.
