Public Pays for Garbage Mess Says LoP

Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Sandeep Narang, has demanded the immediate cancellation of user charges levied for waste management, citing the civic body’s failure to provide adequate garbage collection services.

In a letter addressed to MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar, Narang criticised the lack of coordination between the MCD’s waste concessionaires and residents, claiming that door-to-door garbage collection is largely absent. According to him, nearly 60–70% of waste is still being removed by privately hired staff, undermining the justification for user charges. “Residents are paying for services they are not receiving,” Narang wrote, alleging widespread inconvenience due to overflowing garbage points and unsanitary Fixed Compactor Transfer Stations (FCTS), which he said were breeding grounds for disease.

Describing the city’s sanitation system as “far from satisfactory,” Narang urged the MCD to first ensure universal waste collection before imposing any financial burden on citizens. He called for the immediate closure of dumping sites and demanded they be transformed into public spaces for community use. “The Aam Aadmi Party demands the user charge be scrapped immediately,” he said, pressing the civic leadership to prioritise public interest and issue rollback orders without delay.

The issue has triggered public criticism as many residents echo concerns about mounting waste and lack of accountability in waste disposal systems. The MCD has yet to respond to the demand.
