PMC’s Pothole Repairs Fail to Impress Citizens

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) recently undertook a special drive to address the city’s numerous potholes, claiming to have repaired over 1,224 craters across three nights. Despite the PMC’s efforts, many citizens remain unimpressed, criticising the quality of the repairs and questioning the frequent deterioration of the roads.

The drive, initiated in response to complaints from citizens and discussions with a Member of Parliament and the police department, aimed to address the growing issue of potholes exacerbated by ongoing infrastructure projects and persistent rains. The head of PMC’s road department explained that excavation works by various government agencies often damage roads, leading to the formation of large potholes, particularly on asphalt surfaces. The recent incessant rains have further complicated repair efforts, making it difficult to maintain road quality.

Taking advantage of a brief dry spell on Saturday night, PMC’s road department began filling potholes, continuing the work through Sunday and Monday nights. The repairs involved patchwork using concrete and asphalt to address the damage. According to PMC data, 478 potholes were filled on Saturday night, followed by 419 on Sunday and 327 on Monday. Despite these efforts, citizens and experts have voiced their dissatisfaction. Critics argue that the repairs are superficial and do not address the root causes of the problem. A representative from the citizens’ group Pune City Eye called for a more permanent solution, suggesting that PMC implement a system to monitor road conditions, possibly using drones to identify and address issues promptly. Another resident from Mukundnagar noted that the repairs often fail within days, leaving loose gravel that poses a significant risk for accidents.

Kothrud residents specifically highlighted areas like Mahatma Society and Kothrud Depot as being particularly affected by potholes. A local resident expressed frustration, stating, “PMC’s work hardly shows. The roads are all pothole-ridden and accident-prone.” Additionally, roads connecting Bavdhan and Pashan, along with the surrounding bylanes, have seen little improvement despite repeated repairs. Another citizen criticised the apparent waste of taxpayers’ money, as potholes frequently resurface shortly after being filled. The PMC’s struggle to manage Pune’s road infrastructure reflects a broader challenge in maintaining urban infrastructure amidst rapid development and adverse weather conditions. The situation underscores the need for more robust, long-term solutions to ensure road safety and efficient use of public funds. As the PMC continues its efforts, it must address citizens’ concerns and work towards more sustainable and effective road maintenance practices.
