Piravom–Elanji Road Closure Traps Vehicles on Narrow Diversions

Traffic has been fully restricted through the Palachuvadu sector of Kerala’s Piravom–Elanji Road while the Public Works Department rebuilds a collapsed culvert at Thekkummoottilpadi, forcing vehicles into narrow interior roads and creating difficulties for residents and travellers.

The closure began after repair work started on the damaged culvert on the 19th. The culvert’s slab had broken and the structure had deteriorated around three months earlier. The Public Works Department is undertaking the reconstruction before the start of the Sabarimala pilgrimage season, when the route is used by long-distance vehicles, including pilgrimage traffic, as well as private buses and other vehicles.

The road has been closed completely because its limited width does not allow traffic to be managed by diverting vehicles across one half while construction continues on the other. Traffic is being redirected through alternative roads. Residents of the Palachuvadu and Thekkummoottilpadi areas have been allowed to use local lanes, but they have complained that other vehicles, including heavy vehicles, are entering these narrow roads.

Warning boards have been installed near Piravom Hospital Junction, Palachuvadu, Mulakkulam Pallippadi, Kalluvettamadam and Mukkada Thazham. However, vehicles that do not understand or follow the diversion information are continuing towards the closed section and becoming stuck on interior roads. Residents said this has increased congestion and disruption in areas that are not designed to carry the normal volume of traffic from the main road.

The diversion has also created a safety and utility risk. Local residents reported incidents in which large vehicles entering the restricted roads damaged or snapped electricity service wires. They said the problem was being worsened by drivers attempting to use residential and canal-bank roads instead of following the official diversion route.

The Piravom–Elanji road carries hundreds of vehicles, including private buses and long-distance traffic. The current closure therefore affects more than the immediate construction zone: it has shifted through-traffic onto smaller roads and increased the importance of clear advance warnings and physical enforcement at diversion points.

Residents have asked the authorities to enforce the restriction strictly and ensure that vehicles use only the roads designated for diversion. The reconstruction is being undertaken as a full road closure, with the Public Works Department’s stated aim of completing the work before the Sabarimala pilgrimage season begins.
