Perumbavoor road flooding disrupted travel near Aimoor St Anne’s Convent School after rain on Thursday evening, turning the road into a waterlogged stretch and making night-time movement difficult, according to a report by Mathrubhumi – Kochi.
The flooding has affected pedestrians and children using the road, while people travelling to a nearby shopping complex have reportedly been forced to wade through the water. The report attributed the recurring problem to deficiencies in road construction and the absence of adequate roadside drains.
Residents face difficulties whenever it rains, with the stretch outside the school becoming particularly hard to use. The waterlogging also creates a safety concern for children and people walking along the road, especially after dark, when submerged road edges and uneven surfaces may be difficult to identify.
The affected location had previously been near the Union Bank branch in the same area, where waterlogging was reported for several years. Measures were taken there by raising the road and laying cement blocks to address the accumulation of water.
However, the flooding has now shifted towards the area in front of the school, according to the report. The change indicates that earlier work at the bank-side stretch did not resolve the broader drainage problem along the road. Without a continuous drainage system, raising one section of a road can redirect standing water towards another low-lying point.
The report did not provide details of any immediate response from the local authority, a repair schedule or a permanent drainage plan. The next steps required at the site, including an inspection of the road construction and the provision of drains, remain unspecified in the supplied report.
