Patna’s waste management system is set to be developed as a revenue-generating model, with Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary saying scientific processing and recycling could earn about Rs 50 crore annually for the city. The announcement was made at an event at Bapu Tower in Gardanibagh on Friday.
Choudhary said the state government planned to use scientific methods to process waste and recover value through recycling. He did not provide details of the proposed processing facilities, the implementation agency, the investment required or the timeline for achieving the annual revenue target.
The announcement places waste management within a broader state effort to link urban services with resource recovery and cleaner production. The chief minister also said Bihar had framed a comprehensive Green Hydrogen Policy aimed at promoting clean-energy production, attracting private investment and reducing the state’s carbon footprint through sustainable industrial alternatives.
The waste-management plan was announced during a programme marking the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the second foundation day of Bapu Tower. Choudhary connected the occasion with Gandhi’s emphasis on cleanliness, service and social responsibility, urging people to reflect those values in everyday conduct.
For Patna, the proposed model would make the treatment and recycling of municipal waste an economic activity in addition to a public-service function. However, the statement did not specify whether the Rs 50 crore figure refers to gross receipts, net revenue or combined earnings from different categories of recyclable and processed waste. It also did not identify the waste streams that would form the basis of the target.
The chief minister’s announcement came as part of a wider programme at Bapu Tower, where he unveiled a bust of Gandhi on the ground floor. The bust was created by ceramic artist and Padma Shri awardee Brahmadev Pandit. Choudhary also launched an online ticketing system for the memorial and released Satyagraha, a magazine published by Bapu Tower.
BJP state president Sanjay Saraogi and building construction department secretary Pranav Kumar addressed the event, while Bapu Tower director Vinay Kumar welcomed the guests. Choudhary described Bapu Tower as a centre for learning about Gandhi’s life, ideas, struggles and journey, saying its use of modern technology would help future generations understand his contribution.
The chief minister also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary. He said Gandhi and Shastri represented simplicity, integrity, duty and national service. The state government’s next steps on the waste-management proposal, including the operating structure, project timeline and financial mechanism, were not outlined at the event.
