IIT Patna has inaugurated a 500-computer laboratory inside its Central Library, creating a dual-purpose facility that will function as a digital library during academic activities and as a computer-based examination centre during tests.
The facility was unveiled by IIT Patna director Amit Patra on Friday, October 2. According to the Times of India report, the laboratory has been equipped with 500 high-performance computers and advanced networking systems. The institute said the facility was conceptualised and executed using its internal resources, without relying on an externally executed infrastructure project.
After the inauguration, Patra inspected the computer hardware, networking systems and other technical arrangements. He also discussed the proposed academic applications of the laboratory, which has been designed to serve both everyday learning requirements and large-scale digital assessments.
During regular academic operations, the facility will operate as a digital library. Students and researchers will be able to use it to access global electronic journals, academic databases and other digital learning resources. The arrangement provides a dedicated location for technology-enabled academic work within the institute’s Central Library.
The same infrastructure will be converted into a 500-terminal digital examination centre during examinations. This will allow IIT Patna to conduct computer-based tests on a large scale in a controlled and secure setting. The dual-use model means that the space can support academic access during normal operations while also meeting the institute’s requirements for technology-driven assessments.
The facility’s creation through internal resources also highlights the role of institutional planning in expanding digital academic infrastructure. Rather than being described as a separate externally executed construction project, the laboratory was developed within the institute’s existing Central Library environment and equipped for multiple uses.
For students and researchers, the immediate change is the availability of a large, dedicated digital resource facility. For the institute, the 500-terminal examination capacity creates a centralised setting for computer-based assessments and reduces the need to arrange such examinations across smaller or temporary spaces, although the report does not provide details of the earlier examination arrangements.
The new laboratory is part of IIT Patna’s effort to strengthen its digital academic ecosystem and support its growing learning and examination needs. The institute has not disclosed in the supplied report the project’s cost, implementation timeline or the date on which regular student access to the facility will begin.
