Panvel’s Karnala Sanctuary to Get New Attractions

Navi Mumbai’s Karnala Bird Sanctuary, a key ecological and tourist hotspot in Panvel Taluka, is poised for a significant transformation as it undergoes a major infrastructure revamp. With an investment of ₹54.17 lakh, the project aims to enhance visitor experience by introducing modern amenities, recreational spaces, and aesthetic upgrades.

Spread across 1,200 hectares, the sanctuary attracts thousands of nature lovers, birdwatchers, and fitness enthusiasts annually. To further elevate its appeal, authorities are implementing a series of enhancements, including a revamped children’s play area with a multi-activity play system, additional seating arrangements, and an open gym for fitness-conscious visitors. One of the standout features of the upgrade will be the installation of life-size Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) animal statues, which will serve both as an educational and visual attraction. Additionally, improved sanitation facilities, new dustbins, and upgraded toilet blocks will be installed to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards across the premises.

According to Range Forest Officer Narayan Rathod, while minor upgrades are undertaken regularly, this year’s revamp is more substantial due to secured funding. “Approvals were granted in November, and work commenced in December 2024. The project is expected to be completed by the end of February 2025,” he stated. The sanctuary recorded over 75,000 visitors last year, and with these new developments, officials anticipate a significant rise in footfall. Given its proximity to Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, the sanctuary remains a preferred destination for eco-tourism and weekend getaways. The upcoming enhancements are expected to strengthen its position as a premier nature retreat while ensuring an improved experience for visitors.
